The brief

To transform commercial offices into a relaxed, yet contemporary specialist dental implant centre. The site being shared with an orthodontic practice needed a clear and separate identity.

Our approach

An initial appraisal was undertaken on site by Chris Young with Dr Bill Schaeffer of The Implant Centre. Our recommendations were as follows:-

• To re-model the entrance foyer. This established The Implant Centre with a clear and defined identity, whilst maximising natural light into this part of the building.
• To remove the existing kitchenette to "open up" the narrow corridor; providing a clear visual reference from the entrance to the reception desk.

Initial practice layout plans were designed by Armstrong Young and were fine tuned to achieve balance for both the clinical needs of the Practice, as well as maximising the physical space requirement for equipment and cabinets. The Centre comprised:-

• Two surgical treatment rooms.
• Decontamination room.
• Assessment room.
• Office.
• Reception/waiting area.
• Imaging room complete with three dimensional imaging/cone beam scanner.
• Disabled access WC.

Detailed mechanical and electrical services drawings were also prepared for the building contractors. The turn-key approach for the Implant Centre project ensured all operations ran smoothly, on budget and on time.

Materials

Both surgeries incorporated Corian work surfaces and solid acrylic cabinet fronts. These materials provided exceptional durability and easy to clean surfaces - essential for asepsis protocol for this specialist practice.

Equipment

Comfort for both patient and dentist were high on the "wish list" and a key requirement during the equipment selection process! A-dec 1040 chairs, with soft upholstery, were selected to provide ultimate patient comfort for long procedures. The unique A-dec 12 o'clock delivery consoles ensured optimum flexibility; ie. exceptional instrument positioning for both four and two handed operations, whilst keeping the instrumentation out of view of patients.

Since project completion in October 2006, this highly successful team has already converted the assessment room into a third surgery and are now looking to expand their activities to another location, in addition to the Haywards Heath site.
